Desktop Window Manager or dwm.exe is the windows process which gives you those aero effects in Windows Vista like Transparency, Live taskbar thumbnails, Flip3D, etc.
In my case it takes 18,800 K memory. But the figure depends on the number of windows that you have open. And switching to Vista Basic will not make the process go away, but only reduce the memory usage.
