I tried Fix IE. Still no joy. I can still get updates through system > automatic updates. Other than that IE 8 crashes every time I try to open it. This just started happening three days ago. I rolled back to IE 7 with the same results. I reinstalled IE 8 knowing what to expect. I reset to default settings although I had no add-ons or toolbars anyway. MS Malicious Software Removal Tool Nov. 2009, MalwareBytes, Avira and SuperAntiSpyware found nothing. Firefox works fine. At this point I would rather not have to reinstall my XP Home. It seems weird that it works at the Windows Update Web site but nowhere else. I'm happy to have that but.......(facepalm)

The Fix IE utility only re-registers the concerned dll files.

You may also try the following too:

    - Reset Internet Explorer Settings or RIES feature of IE.

    - Run sfc /scannow and at the end reboot if asked for

    Default IE8 Crashes

    Hi,

I recommend you to perform the following:

    1. Goto Windows control panel. Uninstall any additional toolbars that are installed.
    2. See the instances of IE7 and IE8. If IE8 was installed from the Windows update, uninstall the same and install a downloaded version.
    3. See if any new patches such as KB 974455 were installed. Just uninstall them from Add or Remove programs.

Ensure to install IE8 from the below link which will not install any third party add-ons:

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...E8_ENUS_XP.EXE

If the issue still persists, revert to me with the below information:

    1. Operating system installed in your PC/laptop.
    2. AntiVirus software which you are using.

This will help me to research further.

Thanks and have a great day!

    Rgds,
    Raghu

    Problem solved.

Hi, there is joy in Mudville.

After visiting about a dozen sites and almost ready to give up for a time, I just Googled fix IE. Good move. (pats self on back)

Although I have Firefox with a ton of add-ons I never altered IE. I don't see any use for toolbars. I keep my AV/Antispyware up to date and scan at least three times a week. I'm not a Microsoft basher and I know that most of the problems I've had with Windows XP where probably self inflicted.

Fix IE didn't work for me. Scannow with my installation disk didn't work. This time I uninstalled IE 8 from a command prompt and IE 7 didn't crash.

I (re)installed IE 8 from the link given above. I have seven tabs open right now and life is good.

It's nice to find a site that doesn't just copy and paste help answers from another site.

This eight year old Dell Dinosaur 2350, with one gig of ram (max) and a twenty nine gig HD and three eight gig flash drives hanging out of it, is ready for another long road trip.

Sorry about the novel. I'm just happy.

Thank you so much for your link, suggestions and help.

I really want IE 9 to come out. I know HTML 5 and CCS 3 aren't standards but they should be supported anyway.

Everything works fine, except it fails to register one .dll file "oleacc.dll" (due to which a problem arises that after pressing Ctrl+F, the find bar does not open).

So I had to type "regsvr32 oleacc.dll" in the cmd prompt.
Plz do rectify it in the next release (which i'm waiting for patiently).
