    Exclamation Why our vBulletin 4 to vBulletin 5 upgrade failed

    Wanting to upgrade our TWC Forum software from vBulletin 4 to the newly released vBulletin 5 forum software, we decided to buy it for USD$209.00.

    Unfortunately, our upgrade experience was not good.

    First, when as is the practice, we closed the board and then went in for the upgrade. We received the following error:

    Unexpected Text:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>
    <b>API Error</b><br><b>Error:</b> database_cant_escape_param<br><b>Args:</b><br><pre style="font-family:Lucida Console,Monaco5,monospace;font-size:small;overflow:auto;border:1px solid #CCC;">array (
    0 =&gt; 'array',
    )</pre>

    vBulletin Support told us that we were getting this error as we had closed the board (which by the way is the normal practice). We needed to keep the board open and then upgrade it. Its a bug in vB5 that needed to be fixed still. But then, this should have been mentioned in the installation instructions.

    So we restored the old vB4 forum back, kept it open and then went in for the upgrade. The upgrade went through. But all the links were broken and different. The forum had broken!

    For example, the link

    forum.thewindowsclub.com/twc-windows-freeware/28263-ultimate-windows-tweaker-v-2-feedback-support.html

    had become
    forum.thewindowsclub.com/forum/windows-discussions/twc-windows-freeware/2558-ultimate-windows-tweaker-v-2-feedback-support

    vB5 was regenerating or changing links looked like and not taking the existing link data. We incidentally use vBSEO on vB4. We were told vB does not support vBDEO, which incidentally is a very useful and popular addon for vB.

    As a result, we are reverting back to vBulletin 4.

    So if you are planning to set up a new forum, you may consider buying it. But if you are planning to upgrade from vBulletin 4 to vBulletin 5, you may want to think about it - or maybe wait for some time.

    As a result of this we may have lost a few posts or new threads. So if you think you have lost yours, please repost or bump your thread.

    What a mess vBulletin 5 is! Everything was broken!

    We are back on vBulletin 4 again. At least we now have a working forum.

    See how the traffic crashed during the upgrade / fixing period.

    Will take time, maybe a week or two, to recover I guess.

    Will look for some basic responsive theme to make the forum mobile-friendly now, and forget about vB5!
