Default Restored .pst won't open in Outlook

The computer of one our users crashed. He had 9 .pst files on his c:\drive that he had opened as Outlook Data Files. He uses Outlook 2003, SP3 and We have an Exchange 2003 server.

When I restored the backed up copies of his 9 .pst files from a backup tape, only one of them
will open. The other 8 give this error message: "The file (path and filename.pst) is not a personal folders file, when trying to open it as an Outlook data file."

I tried scanpst.exe, but that doesn't recognize them either.

Does anyone know if these .pst files can be fixed somehow so that they can be opened in Outlook?

    Thanks.
