    Cool Zune phone for real ?

    Long Zheng of Istartedsomething.com has come up with another discovery. Yesterday there was a Zune version update to version 4.2.202.0. It updates the installer INFto include a few additional few lines.

    [Microsoft.NTx86]
    %Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\MS_COMP_MTPZ
    %Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0710
    %Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_063E
    %Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0640
    %Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0641
    %Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USB\VID_045E&PID_0642

    %ZuneIp.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZIP, umb\urn:microsoft-com:device:mtpz:1

    ; Localizable strings
    Msft = “Microsoft”
    Zune.DeviceDesc = “Zune”

    Phone.DeviceDesc = “Phone”

    Moreover, just as how the current three generation Zunes are represented by three different IDs, there are three unique class IDs and specifically Product IDs (PID) that identify three potential “Zune Phone” models (not storage capacities) off the bat. My bet is that they’re not just capacity variants (since various Zune capacities are all grouped under the same PID), but three actual hardware SKUs.

    A timely coincidence before Mobile World Congress? I think not.

    Update: Whilst it is possible there might be system-wide Zune integration into Windows Mobile 7, this particular driver references specific hardware IDs that are locked to a vendor (Microsoft) and product which under USB body regulations cannot be masked, thus this has to be Microsoft devices. “Pink” anyone?

    Default Is Windows Mobile 7, the Zune phone ?

    After Long Zheng found the Zune phone bits, neowin contacted MS and this was the reply
    “we have no plans to create a Zune phone.” The spokesperson also stated that one day Zune could be “part of the phone experience”

    And here is some details about Windows Mobile 7 that is about to be showcased in Mobile World Congress as per PPCGeeks.com

    The User Interface is based upon codename “METRO”. It will be very similar to the Zune HD User Interface with a complete revamp of the “Start” screen. The UI is “Very Clean”, “Soulful” and “Alive”

    Unfortunately there will be no Flash support at the get go as there was not enough time to implement these features.

    Windows Phone 7 will only support application installation through service based delivery. (i.e Marketplace). Application installation via storage card will not be possible.

    No Multi-Task support. Applications will “Pause” when in the background, however will support notifications via push notifications.

    Marketplace will now support “try before you buy” as well as an API

    No NETCF backwards compatibility. This means the original rumor of no backward compatibility for applications holds to be true. That being said, there are high hopes of porting the NetCF to the newer platform easily.

    Microsoft is confident that devices will be ready by September 2010

    Full Zune Integration

    Windows Mobile Device Center will no longer be used. Zune software to take over syncing via PC.

    OEM Interfaces will not be allowed to run on the device. Say goodbye to Sense UI / SPB Mobile Shell / Point UI / Infinity, etc, etc

    Full XBOX Gaming Integration (Gamer tag, achievements, friends, avatars, merchandising, etc)

    Full support for social networking
    Seems like Zune Phone is Windows mobile 7 itself.

    I guess we will have to wait next week to see if these rumours are true. I too am excited to see the Zune interface integrated into Windows Mobile 7.
