Default Sound delay occurs on Windows 10 PC

Dell XPS-13, Windows 10 Creators Update

On my brand new Dell laptop there is a 1-2 second sound delay.

To see what I mean: Go to Control Panel>Sound>Sound properties>highlight Asterisk>Test

When "Test" is clicked the sound should be instantaneous but on my new machine it is not. There is a one-second delay before the sound is produced (WAV file)

The sound is instantaneous on my Windows 7 laptop, Windows Vista desktop, and it was instantaneous all the way back to Windows 98. As for DOS: PLAY C produced middle C instantaneously when carriage return pressed.

    More info:
Caps lock toggle - 1 sec late
Cuckoo at top of hour - 1 sec late
    Sound properties>speaker properties>creators update>NO AUDIO ENHANCEMENTS
DPC latency? LatencyMon shows no latency problems
Realtek Audio driver reinstalled, no change
Device manager shows "Realtek Audio" NOT "Realtek High Definition Audio".

    Please help

    Hello HappyAndyK
I have used your advice to great advantage in the past.

I ran the troubleshooter and followed your "Windows 10 Sound and Audio problems" page. Below are the results, still one-sec delay.

    24-bit, 48000 Hz was running
    16-bit, 48000 Hz no change
    24-bit, 44100 Hz no change
    16-bit, 44100 Hz no change

    Device Manager
Intel(R) Display Audio - I don't know what this is, left alone
Realtek Audio roll back driver, no help
After this Windows said there's a problem with speaker/headphone enhancements, disabled, do you want to re-enable, I said NO

    Playback Speakers/headphones green bars work

Uninstall device driver - this caused a lot of problems, namely, no sound. Windows fixed it, still have Realtek Audio driver. This useless exercise got me back right where I started. CapsLock sound 1.5 sec delay. Cuckoo at top of hour, 2-sec delay.

Realtek Audio Manager RAVB664.exe will not execute and there is no notification icon. On my Windows Vista machine I have Realtek Audio manager. I can bring it up and do a lot of adjustments. On my brand new laptop no dice.

    Windows 10 Troubleshooter, Playing Audio
    Generic Audio Driver not fixed
Generic Audio Driver Detected yellow [!] but Device Manager shows it to be working

After going through the troubleshooter I don't think Windows 10 knows that a delay in playing sound is "trouble".

Why would a brand spanking new Dell laptop with Windows 10 Creators Update have ANY problems in the beginning? It is very disconcerting.

I think Windows does not recoginze a 1-sec sound delay as "trouble"

    In Win10 Troubleshooter

Generic Audio Driver detected [!] in yellow otherwise everything else "issue not present"
    ------------
    Green bars work

On Speakers/headphones properties all are same
    There's a TWO SECOND delay when I press [TEST}
    ------------
24 bit 48000 Hz default ok sound out of both speakers
16 bit 44100 Hz no improvement
24 bit 44100 Hz no improvement
16 bit 48000 Hz no improvement
checked Allow applications to take exclusive
    checked Give exclusive mode
    checked Allow hardware acceleration
    Spatial sound none
    ----------
    Device Manager
    Sound, video and game controllers
Intel(R) Display Audio I don't know what this is
Realtek Audio Notice it does not say Realtek High Definition Audio

Realtek HD Audio is on my machine (RtkNGUI64.exe) but it won't execute. On my WinVista machine I click on the tray icon and it comes up with many, many options. Not on Windows 10.

    Hello HappyAndyK
I just had a laugh: "Low latency audio" is a new feature of Windows10. Could this be out of whack?

    Default Sound delay Windows 10

I am starting a new thread because my old thread about sound delay went into oblivion.

Dell XPS-13, Windows 10 Creators Update
On my brand new Dell laptop there is a 1-2 second sound delay.
To see what I mean: Go to Control Panel>Sound>Sound properties>highlight Asterisk>Test
Most disconcerting, there is a 2-second delay when pressing caps lock.

For HappyAndyK - I ran Win10 Audio troubleshooter but it doesn't recognize a sound delay as trouble.

Device manager shows Realtek Audio not Realtek High Definition Audio.
Realtek Audio Manager is running in the background but I cannot bring up a window.

It could be low Latency Audio as you say :P But Microsoft says it is to the tune of 5-15ms.

    Hi Matrix
What about Realtek Audio (which I have) vs Realtek High Definition Audio which is not working on my machine.

Did you manage to find the solution? I just stumbled upon this thread, where I have the exact same issue...
Anythong that has to do with sound seems to work fine: When playing a youtube or something, i dont see any delay in audio/video sync.... But indeed any windows notification, I get the pop up, and 1 - 2 seconds later the sound plays.

I also have the new Dell XPS13 ...
