Default Windows 10 crashed after Windows Update

As best I can determine, I got through the latest comprehensive WIN Update (I think its 1607), and then after using it for a day,
I put my PC to sleep.

Next morning I get the proverbial BSOD, with a message to look at windows.com/stopcode, and a message about
a kernel failure. There was no way the Windows 10 recovery tools could fix the problem, no matter what I tried. No desktop,
no matter if I tried rollback to last version, or troubleshoot, or reset the pc.

So, I restored a complete disk image from backup, and I'm good to go.

My question is this: is there a way to know if it was due to the update, or a bug when in sleep mode?
I have no idea what caused it.
