Default Windows restarts after normal shutdown.

My laptop running Windows 7 Pro restarts after selecting normal shutdown as if you have selected restart.

Can anyone tell me how to correct this. Thanks.

Assuming its not your hardware problem, corrupted Power Plans or bad Drivers are usually the problem. So see if any of these help you:

1] Run sfc /scannow or System File Checker and restart your computer.

2] Run the Power Troubleshooter. Type %systemroot%\system32\msdt.exe -id PowerDiagnostic in explorer bar and hit Enter to open it.

3] Open regedit and navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Double-click on PowerdownAfterShutdown value. Ensure that its value is "0".

4] Open System Properties by typing sysdm.cpl in Run box and hitting Enter. Inder Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery > Settings > uncheck the Automatically restart option. Click Apply/OK and Exit. See if this helps you.

Many thanks for your help and apologies for not getting back to you sooner.
In fact we followed your detailed suggestions/instructions but no change resulted.
After uninstalling AVG 2013 the problem has now gone away so it would seem that it was AVG which caused this problem. I'm not sure why this should have occurred since I have AVG 2013 on another almost identical laptop without this problem.

AVG is a great anti-malware solution, but it has caused problems from some people. I hope you have replaced it with something else. I use and recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on all my W7 systems, and Windows Defender (an updated version of MSE) on my W8 systems.
