Default Have I accidentally made computer vulnerable by adjusting registry

Hi all, I'm very new to forums so sorry if I've failed to find an answer elsewhere but I think my question is quite specific. I recently tried to bring an old family computer back to life after it was left for dead. The firewall was one (of many) issues - it would not turn on despite many troubleshooting attempts. I eventually found a tip in the comments of the microsoft support site which is pasted below:

In Registry Editor, browse to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\SharedAccess
Right click SharedAccess, and click Permissions.
    Click Add.
In the “Enter the object names to select” field, type “NT SERVICE\mpssvc”. Then click Check Names. The name should change to MpsSvc
    Click OK.
Select Full Control in the Allow column.
    Click OK.

I performed the above action because it was highly rated on the forum and voila, the firewall started working again. I was very happy about this until all of a sudden two days later my email got quite seriously hacked! I feel like King Amateur and was just hoping someone can explain whether the thing I've done with the registry above is likely to be the reason I got hacked, or is this just coincidence? I thought getting the firewall turned on would have been the safer option! Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance.

The method you followed should not be the cause. Maybe its just a coincidence.

Thanks very much to both of you for the help, glad to know this wasn't me being completely stupid with my firewall...
