Default Windows Live Photo Gallery encountered error, cannot start. Error code 0x80070002

My OS is Win7 Pro 32bit with SP1 and all updates installed.

Whenever I try to open Windows Live Photo Gallery I am told: Windows Live Photo Gallery encountered an error and cannot start. Error code 0x80070002.

I have the latest version of WLPG.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program and the repair option, and a Microsoft Fixit which says it succeeded, but the problem persists.

The strange thing is that if I open My Pictures then open a folder and select a picture it opens in WLPG,but if I then click on Edit the program crashes.

If anyone can tell me how to fix this problem I would be grateful.

    Thanks and regards,Roy

    Hello there!

You may be experiencing this problem if the database that is use to track of the photos and videos in Windows Live Photo Gallery is corrupted. To fix this issue, follow the steps below:

    Right-click Pictures.pd6 and select Rename.
Change the name of the file, for example, pictures.bak.
    Start Windows Live Photo Gallery.

To regenerate the Windows thumbnail cache:

    Close Windows Live Photo Gallery.
Click Start, in the Start Search box type %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Expl orer, and then click OK.

Right-click in the Explorer window and select New Folder.
Select all *.DB files and move into the New Folder directory.
    Start Windows Live Photo Gallery.

    If that failed then

    A. First, make sure that the Windows Live Photo Gallery program is not running.
    1. Press CONTROL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
    2. Click the Process tab.
    3. Click WLXPhotoGallery.exe, and then click End process.

    Uninstall WLPG

It could also typically indicate missing or corrupt components.

Please also see if this Fix It Windows Live Photo Gallery freezes, hangs or does not start helps you in anyway.

A reinstall in one last option you may want to consider if nothing works.

As said above some comp might be missing / corrupted. I hope you are having WLPG Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3538.0513)
Do a offline install by getting offline installer from Download latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Build 15.4.3538.0513 | The Windows Club

    Direct link http://g.live.com/1rewlive4-all/en/wlsetup-all.exe

And install WL Movie Maker as well as Photo Gallery along with whichever Essential app you require.

Also make sure your Windows is uptodate else do a Windows updt

One another thing to try if offline install does not solve ur prob-
Do you have multiple users to sign in to Windows 7? If yes try signing to other user and see if it works.Else create a new user and see if it works. This is just to isolate the prob.

    Perhaps this might help:
"You may have received a 0x80070002 or 0x80070003 error message after you downloaded an update from Microsoft Windows Update. If so, then it can indicate a registry conflict has occured in your computer system and you will need to fix it as soon as possible."

That site doesn't look legit though. It's asking you to download few software which I hardly trust. Also it main header says Microsoft

Thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread.

I tried all the suggestions given but none worked, so I took the more drastic step of reinstalling Windows 7 and installing all the various Microsoft updates. As part of the reinstallation I redownloaded Windows Live Essentials from Microsoft Update and installed WLPG ,Movie Maker and Windows Live Mail. I am pleased to say that WLPG now works.

In passing I would add that the WLPG uninstaller is useless,as many registry entries are left behind along with the program folder, which perhaps explains why uninstalling/reinstalling or repairing the program doesn't work.

    Regards,Roy

@royw That's the last step you should hhave taken, anyway its nice that everthing is fine.
Yeah, sometime the regular uninstallers leave behind traces frm prev ver of WLEssentials and so we have to use some difft method to uninstall. Anyway I would suggest you get the Offline installer and use that to install the WL Essential apps.
