Default Windows Defender does not start after installing Microsoft Security Essentials

I am running Vista, SP-2 on my desktop and everything is working well except Windows Defender. I have tried restarting it with no luck. Is there a clean way to uninstall the app and download a new clean version ? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Best to email me at [removed to protect your privacy]. Thanks !

    Hi, Dick Quinn.

    Welcome to The Windows Club.

If you installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), it includes the anti-spyware engine of Windows Defender. Thus, Windows Defender is turned of with the installation.

Please let us know if you have not installed MSE.

Since Windows Vista, Windows Defender is core component of Windows Security, that can be disabled but can't be re-installed or uninstalled completely.
You can reset to factory default settings, it will remove all signatures and go back to the original signatures.

Run CMD as Administrator and execute the following commands one by one.

    CD "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender"
To navigate to Windows Defender installation folder.

    MpCmdRun.exe -RestoreDefaults -All
    Reset everything to factory default.
You must check for updates after restore process.
