    Download and install a reliable anti-virus software. You can find the top lists even on this forum

    1- Use a Standard User Account (SUA).
    2- Set User Account Control (UAC) to max.
    3- install security softwares.
    4- do a backup of your system.

    then once done:

    1- dont download and run unknown programs/files, check them first on Virus Total.
    2- Don't open unknown senders mails, delete them right away.

    You will likely get a ton of recommendations for different antivirus' and products, however, the way I secure my own Servers and Desktops, as well those of my clients are as follows;

    Avast Internet Security for the Antivirus
    Malwarebytes Premium - running protecting in real time

    Note that both of the above are paid products though.

    Avast Internet Security takes care of blocking Virus' from activating or being downloaded, with the bonus of a Free excellent password manager included
    Malwarebytes Premium takes care of Malware that AV's often miss, as well as blocking access to known infected websites, as well as providing Exploit and Ransomware protection

    Both products work very well together and give considerably better protection than the built in Windows Defender provided by Microsoft. Neither I nor my clients have ever had any performance related issues by running both of these applications in Real-Time scanninng modes.

    I hope that's helpful and if you would like further info, please do post again.

    Regards, Andrew
