hi !
Ramesh: THANKS ! , that is a very good tip.
Mike: "You need 1GB minimum to run Vista"
no, that´s not correct, it depends on the version you want to use:
Recommended minimum hardware requirements for Windows Vista:
Windows Vista Home Basic
* 800-megahertz (MHz) 32-bit (x86) processor or 800-MHz 64-bit (x64) processor
* 512 megabytes (MB) of system memory
Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Ultimate
* 1-gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) processor or 1-GHz 64-bit (x64) processor
* 1 GB of system memory

System requirements for Windows Vista
i have used Vista Business on a P3 1GHz with 512 MB ram, after stripping Vista by stopping all unnecessary system services (network etc.) that i did not need as i had no internet connection, Vista was down to 174 MB and it did run quite well.
but of course it depends on how many programs and documents, tabs, windows etc. that you have open at the same time, and also on where you put your temp-files.
using a ramdisk can help a lot even when you are short of ram, i tried several configurations and ended up with using 20 MB ramdisk.
fx. Opera with several tabs, Foxit with several docs, was no problem, but when i opened to many docs then of course the HD "rattled" a lot...
but then i had the standard configuration with page file on C:, now i have another computer, a P4 1,7GHz 1,5GB ram (RDRAM 800MHz) that i have optimized as far as i can.
i have 3 HD´s with Vista on #1 and then 2 page-files on their own partition on 2 separate HD´s,
after setting it up i noticed a BIG performance improvement. (had 1GB at that time).
i therefore believe it would have improved my experience with 512MB ram, if i had used the same setup on that computer.
in fact a few days ago i was thinking about trying exactly that on my P3, as i cannot install more than 512Mb in it...
