    Default Vista Disk Defragmenter Setup

Would you say a setup for weekly disk defragging keeps the comp in optimizing peak performance?

Seeing everyday i am changing files, renaming files and deleting old ones.

I think you could change your schedule to even "monthly".

In Vista, defrag happens quietly in the background all the time. The default schedule, for this automatic behind-the-scenes work, I think, is weekly.

This way, you never have to worry if your data access is slowing down. And in days of fast processors, its not much of an issue anyway, imo.

To change the schedule, use the options on the Defrag Now page.

If you wish to see the statistics, to make sure it’s working properly, run defrag.exe in an elevated command window, and find out all the options with “Defrag /?”

To disable Vista defrag feature :
Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Defragment your hard drive > grant permission > Unclick Run automatically if you want this feature disabled > OK.

More info at Understanding Windows Vista Disk Defragmenting Utility.

How often to defrag would depend on your usage. And yes, if you do a lot od adding/deleting/editing files it may be a good idea to defrag regularly.

The Vista defragger defrag in the background, but it lacks a visual as in XP.

If you are willing to pay, check out the latest Diskeeper, it can be set on auto mode and defrags real fast (also under lower free space).

Is there anyway to tell if your disk IS defragging? I manually went and started the Vista defragger to try and fix a game problem, but it never actually showed it running. All it says was wait a few minutes to a few hours, and 5 hours later there was no change. From what I can tell it may not even be working at all.

Ah thanks for the link. Also, I thought the circular animation was just that, an animation. I was unsure if it was paused or stopped do to some other outside interference.

Vista defragger works by default every week. U can change the schedule. I suggest a freeware JKdefrag or defraggler as standby/occasional tool
