Default Defragging Hard Disk Under Vista

    Hi,

I have Defrag set to run once a week automatically.

Do I also need to run a Defrag manually on occasions, or will I get the same result?

Although Defrag is set to run weekly, I have never noticed the programme running. Is this unusual?

    Thanks

If you have set Vista defrag utility to run every week, I think it should be good enough. It runs in the background as per your set preferences. This link may help you in Understanding Windows Vista Disk Defragmenting Utility. | WinVistaClub

If you are looking for some freeware 3rd party defrag utilities see this: Freeware Disk Defragmenter Utilities for Windows | WinVistaClub.

    Thanks for responding.

I note from the page you sent that Defrag only runs when the machine is idle.

When my machine is on it is being used, at other times, it is switched off.

Will Defrag be doing its job?

    Thanks.

Yes, it will be doing its job. The defrag happens quietly in the background during its scheduled times when the processor is idle or near-idle. The default schedule, for this automatic behind-the-scenes work, I think, is weekly, every Wednesday at 1:00 AM.

Try IObit's Smart Defrag. It helped me since it also has boot- time defrag.
