    Unhappy Windows Update Possibly Broken?

Hey, everybody. I am running Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Update says : 'CHECKING FOR UPDATES' and never stops to actually give me a list. Therefore, I can only get them by hitting 'shut down and install updates'. I tried a system restore, but I seem to have lost all of my restore points. HELP!

    THINGS I TRIED:

    1. Microsoft Fix-it. always diagnoses with the same problem, claims to have fixed it.
    2. a batch script re-registering all the components.
    3. the same batch script but with aggressive mode.
    4. Disable Windows firewall.
    5. NET STOP and NET START the service and BITS
    6. Disable Windows Defender (which i hated anyway).
    7. Disable Windows Firewall.

Other things you might need to know:
    - I am an administrator and the only person that uses this computer
    - I have Microsoft Security Essentials
    - I turned UAC off because it annoys me
    - I have IObit's Advanced SystemCare 5 PRO and Malware Fighter PRO

Just the fact that you mention you've lost all your restore points may suggest you've caught a bug.

I'd download, install and update Malwarebytes' Free. Then run a full scan in Safe Mode.

Hope Troubleshoot: Windows Updates fails to install in Windows 7 | WinVistaClub or the one of the links at the end of that post help you.

------------------------------NEVER MIND EVERYBODY PROBLEM SOLVED -------------------------

Today I encountered error 8000FFFF and deleted the registry keys. Now 'optionalfeatures.exe' works again.

Yesterday I was stuck in a reboot loop and had to use the recovery disk to do a system restore.

This is starting to get really annoying

    Should I reinstall windows.

Also, for those of you who have an unmodified system32 folder can you zip it and send it?

I'd run sfc /scannow to check your system files
