Default Make taskbar icons bigger in Windows

    Hi,

I have some icons in my taskbar that I would like to enlarge. I have the bar set to large icons, but would like them larger. I can expand the bar vertically, but the icons stay the same size.

They are in ico format (16x16). My paint program will not save icons in this format larger than this size. I believe they would be scaled down in any event. I don't think other icon formats are compatible in Vista.

    Advice please

I dont think this can be done using any freeware or UI.

The registry key the deals with this is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics and changing the string value of "MinWidth" may make it possible for you to manipulate the dimensions.

But I am not sure about the effects, nor have I tried it. If you want to, create a system restore point first before trying anything.

    Hi !

    Changing "MinWidth" works.
I use it to decrease the size of taskbar-icons.
Fx "52" gives you large icons without text.

Note: this only works together with "Combine when taskbar is full" (Stacking), and "Never combine" (No stacking)

But i donīt know what happens with larger values of "MinWidth"....

    Thanks to both for responding.

    I think I'll wait awhile

    Best wishes.

Some have said that if a person alters the registry then they should backup the registry.

Am I correct in assuming that a restore point will include the registry settings, and hence making a backup of the registry is uneccessary?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I did not understand the stacking/no stacking comment!

Regarding the taskbar. If the icons in the taskbar are enlarged, via the Registry, will the Start Windows Button be enlarged as well? Will the icons in the Notification Area be enlarged?

    Thanks

The system restore point will include the registry back up too, but no harm in backing up the registry additionally too.

    Only the taskbar-icons is changed.
Start Button and Notification Area are not affected.

    Stacking ?
    Do a search...

    Thank you.

Have you come across a reference that discusses the dimensions and meaning regarding MinWidth?

    Thanks

Ps. There is no reference to MinWidth in the registry. I suppose there must be a default in operation? It can of course be created.
