    Exclamation Why our vBulletin 4 to vBulletin 5 upgrade failed

    Wanting to upgrade our TWC Forum software from vBulletin 4 to the newly released vBulletin 5 forum software, we decided to buy it for USD$209.00.

    Unfortunately, our upgrade experience was not good.

    First, when as is the practice, we closed the board and then went in for the upgrade. We received the following error:

    Unexpected Text:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>
    <b>API Error</b><br><b>Error:</b> database_cant_escape_param<br><b>Args:</b><br><pre style="font-family:Lucida Console,Monaco5,monospace;font-size:small;overflow:auto;border:1px solid #CCC;">array (
    0 =&gt; 'array',
    )</pre>

    vBulletin Support told us that we were getting this error as we had closed the board (which by the way is the normal practice). We needed to keep the board open and then upgrade it. Its a bug in vB5 that needed to be fixed still. But then, this should have been mentioned in the installation instructions.

    So we restored the old vB4 forum back, kept it open and then went in for the upgrade. The upgrade went through. But all the links were broken and different. The forum had broken!

    For example, the link

    forum.thewindowsclub.com/twc-windows-freeware/28263-ultimate-windows-tweaker-v-2-feedback-support.html

    had become
    forum.thewindowsclub.com/forum/windows-discussions/twc-windows-freeware/2558-ultimate-windows-tweaker-v-2-feedback-support

    vB5 was regenerating or changing links looked like and not taking the existing link data. We incidentally use vBSEO on vB4. We were told vB does not support vBDEO, which incidentally is a very useful and popular addon for vB.

    As a result, we are reverting back to vBulletin 4.

    So if you are planning to set up a new forum, you may consider buying it. But if you are planning to upgrade from vBulletin 4 to vBulletin 5, you may want to think about it - or maybe wait for some time.

    As a result of this we may have lost a few posts or new threads. So if you think you have lost yours, please repost or bump your thread.

    What a mess vBulletin 5 is! Everything was broken!

    We are back on vBulletin 4 again. At least we now have a working forum.

    See how the traffic crashed during the upgrade / fixing period.

    Will take time, maybe a week or two, to recover I guess.

    Will look for some basic responsive theme to make the forum mobile-friendly now, and forget about vB5!

    We just upgraded to 5 about a week ago and it has been a disaster as well. My keyword rankings for the forums have gone down over 80%, with plenty of issues and unhappy forum members who don't like the layout and glitches.

    I know it's been a while since the OP shared his experience but I wanted to say that I'm also about to downgrade back to vb4 and hopeful we will have the same recovery results as the OP.

    Honestly, I'm pretty unhappy that VB makes claims that 5 connect is "SEO friendly" amongst other claims- it is clearly not. Reading through the VB forums, the responses from the lead developer and VB support team are shocking and I would NEVER have purchased vbulletin had I seen there responses prior to making my decision. Every response says "seo is trickery and unecessary" and "seo is made up by seo companies" - are you kidding me? They clearly have SEO confused with Black Hat SEO and don't understand the importance of simply laying things out so Google can understand and properly index a page. In addition, their curt responses to people asking about downgrading, or how not to lose data during a downgrade, is simply "Downgrades will never be an option." Fin.

    I used to have an "able college" web site, first on comland.com, then on prismnet.net, then on earthlink.net. I've used a few different board engines over those years. Sometimes, because of one major thing or another, I've had to abandon a board engine and move onto another. Now, because I've been using free board engines, I have no idea what it is like to have paid for board engines as vboardThis, vboardThat. The only thing I might recommend: Get another board engine, free or pay-for, and get rid of vBX for good and never look back.

    We moved from HTTP to HTTPS and a lot of things messed up. We do plan to move to a good forum software which allows us to migrate content as well as the URLs easily - paid or free after I return from Germany next week. Even to log in I have to disable Firefox protection.

    Any suggestions would be most welcome.
