Default What are Featured Updates in Windows 7?

Microsoft's Windows Updates has been enhanced in Windows 7 to take advantage of changes in the security model and to better expose optional and featured updates.

    But what are Featured Updates?

    To see it navigate to:
    Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change settings

You will see NO documentation in Windows 7 about it.

Apparently, "when the option isn't yet configured, it has the Ultimate Extras icon. The icon doesn't show in the "Change settings" but only on the main page where it tells you that you have more options to configure. It show when you click the link."

Searching for it on the net will throw NO results about this NEW option, which however very much exists in Windows 7. You dont however see it in Vista.

Microsoft discontinued Ultimate Extras in Windows 7. But instead you now see Featured Updates. Is there a corelation ?

I have asked Microsoft for a clarification and am awaiting an answer.

    This looks fishy.

Even i had come across this while making my Observations and Screenshots thread. But i thought it must have been a left over from Vista's core.

But the strange thing is that its present in the Build 7022 too!

If anybody has access to any new build, can they verify whether this is present or has been removed?

I am guessing that they could be some sort of sponsored updates. Strange Google does not throw up anything at all.

Featured Updates have been re-named to Software Notifications in 7048, for some reason ...

Thanks alsiladka for pointing it out.

The word "featured" programs still remains to be defined.

Ed Bott on his blog says that these are the Live Essentials.

The second, however, suggests that Microsoft might be paving the way to deliver “new featured programs” such as those in Windows Live (Messenger, Mail, Writer, etc.).
