Default Windows 7 SP1 Updates fails with error 80073701

    My first post here!

This is my third different error while trying to install SP1 on W7 Pro 64-bit. SFC and CheckSUR had found errors but all that is repaired but now I get this latest error. I've also tried Mr. FixIt and some MS TroubleShooter but nothing helps.

Hmmm, it won't let me post a SkyDrive link to my CBS.log.

    Here’s a snippet from the CBS.log.

    2011-03-31 19:29:25, Error CSI 0000003c@2011/3/31:23:29:25.447 (F) d:\w7rtm\base\wcp\componentstore\csd_locking.cpp(3 24): Error STATUS_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING originated in function CCSDirectTransaction::LockComponent expression: (null)

At first I thought that it was only having a problem replacing one W7 installed print driver but now I think that this may just be just the first, as it just starting. It seems to start with "prnbr002.inf". There was some missing files associated with that "prnbr005.inf" driver but I got them from another PC but still get the same error.

This a fairly new Dell PC that came with W7 installed, so I can't do a repair install either.

I'm also wondering about what the "d:\w7rtm\base\wcp\componentstore\csd_locking. cpp" in the log right after the error means? Is it looking for something on a CD/DVD?

I see that you have run SFC and CheckSUR. Is this Windows Update Fixit the one you have tried? If not please try it.

Error Code 80073701 pertains to an Assembly missing error.

Create a system restore point first so that you can always revert back if things don't work out. This is important.

Maybe, I repeat maybe, it will be helpful to run the .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool.

Perhaps someone else here has a better answer...

No, Mr. FixIt that I ran appears on many MS pages. IIRC, it has a normal and aggressive modes, both of which I tried.

I've since aquired a CBS.log from a W7 Pro 64-bit PC that installed SP1. It seems that the installer goes through three different stages with all sorts of drivers that are included with the orginal W7 install. In my case, it errors at the beginning with a long way to go.

I always create a restore point but several funny things have happened. I've tried both the stand alone SP1 installer and the WU SP1 installer. I've had my manual restore point disappear. Yesterday I tried the WU SP1 installer again and it never created one before starting! I was told by a Dell Tech that WU created restore points tend not to be rock solid as manual ones.

I also had a support ticket into MS but most of which they suggested, I've already done. I received an email today that my ticket has been passed up to a higher level.

What's with the URL's? I can't even "reply with quote" because you have URL's in your post!

That Mr. FixIt found a problem with the WU components but the SP1 from WU failed with the same error after two minutes. The stand alone installer errors after about 16 minutes.

Here's the link to my Stand Alone Installer CBS.log: cid-03f8c606baa1b49f.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Documents/CBS^_2.txt

    I haven't tried the Net.Framework Tool yet.

I've read that page from your link before. It has that same d:\7RTM\......... in it. That doesn't show up in the CBS.log from a failed attempt from a SP1 WU try.

Its an anti-spam measure. You will be able to post URLs after you complete 10 posts. Meanwhile pls post without http/ww and someone will correct it

I ran across posts about KB976902 in a Google search. Some say that it's need for a smooth install of SP1 or it may not be offered to one who doesn't have it and another installed. It doesn't show up for me as installed but a search shows packages for it installed. I had a issue where WU scan wouldn't stop and my WU list vanished. CheckSUR fixed that but maybe left KB976902 from the list but that's just a guess.

I also notice that the SP1 update as went from optional to important in WU.

    Hi there,

You have any security software installed ? Sometime that can causes issues. Reboot the system in Selective Startup then try to update it and see if that works. Checked your CBS Log lot of assemblies missing i doubt it can resolve easily because of the amount of items missing. Do you have any Printer? If so try to reinstall the Printer drivers.

I have tried from a clean boot but still get the same error. I've looked at a CBS.log from a PC that was able to install SP1 and you'll see what appears to be errors but it installed. At the point where the 80073701 shows up a problem with "prnbr005.inf". I've compared it to another system and it appears that nothing is missing from the SxS folder or any other location for "prnbr005.inf".

Yes, I have a printer but the print drivers that appear to have a problems are ones that are included/installed with W7.

Sometime Printer driver alter the build-in drivers for convenience.
