Default Open With context menu opens slowly or is unresponsive

When I right click on Open With it takes "forever" before the dialog box to choose program from opens. The same happens if I choose Properties/Change.
In the meantime Windows Explorer is un-responsive.

What can I do (if anything) to fix this on my W7 64-bit Home Premium?

I would keep Resource Monitor > CPU tab open during the delay to see which process(es) are holding up progress. Only then you will know where to look.

whs, I really don't know what to look out for, but if it's the cpu usage nothing abnormal were to be seen.
Shortly after I chose program, to delete 2 small files (35kb) took a loooong time. When that was finally done opening Explorer was OK.

Seems I was a little bit mistaken about # of entries:

I don't understand why the numbers of listed apps under "New" is different in Magellan Explorer (Magellan Explorer - Windows File Manager and Explorer Replacement) and Windows Explorer, but perhaps this might be the clue to why I have slow responses when using "Open with"?

Which reg keys are these entries listed under so I can get rid of the Microsoft ones as I'm not using them at all?
