Unhappy Accidental deletion of WinSxS folder

    Hi!

I did a huge mistake by accidentally deleting some of the files from the C:\Windows\winsxs directory. Now my system boot-up time has increased by a lot of time. The laptop goes into a black screen after logging in, and goes on to show that until the desktop is shown finally a couple of minutes later.

I have faced problems with some applications, as in the case of Adobe AfterEffects, Photoshop, etc (Error code- 0xc0150004). Not any problem with the other applications yet.

When I opened the bootlog file "ntbtlog.txt", it showed :
    "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\vga.sys
    ------------
    Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
    ------------
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys
    ------------
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\vga.sys
    -----------
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
    ----------
    Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\srv.sys
    Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\srv.sys"

I dont understand this, all the above drivers get loaded first, and then it shows "Did not load". Especially the VGA.

    Please help !

    Thank you.

    Hi !

The easiest solution must be to reinstall your systembackup ?

There is no help other than what Hackerman says.

winsxs is one of the most important folders in your system. Your long boot time stems from the fact that the system is trying to recreate vital portions of the folder from the mirror. But this is only a partial fix. Without the complete winsxs, your system will never operate correctly.

So I am afraid you will have to bite the bullet and reinstall the system - unless you have images which would be a fast solution. Just make sure you save your data before you reinstall - e.g. with a live Linux CD.

If you have deleted the WinSXS folder or some of its contents, as a result of which you are facing system issues, the only options you have is to try to Repair Windows or go in for a fresh install.

Little caveat though with the repair option - you will not get the .dlls of the installed programs back. Those programs may still fail. System repair can only handle what is on the installation disc. And the SFC is even more limited. It can only repair what's in the mirror. And those are only vital system files.

I think it can be repaired by repair install.
    Just wondering how James fixed.

Repair/Install can repair those files that came with the original system. But many e.g. .dlls come from later program installations and those cannot be repaired that way - or any way short of reinstalling subject program(s).
