I just installed Stardock and tried it.
Itīs completely useless if you want a "Startmenu" !
Itīs just shows you that stupid Metro-BS as smaller icons.

I have tried several of those start menu options. Most don't work very well. Plus I see really no point going back to the old stuff. There is nothing you cannot do with the Win8 start menu or some other way. I rather like to learn how to work with the new facilities than hang on to history.

Start8 looks like a very lame attempt to be the "first" with a fully compatible, designed for Windows 8 start replacement. I don't like it at all. It's just a smaller MetroUI in the area where the Start menu should be. Nothing about it resembles the old Start menu, other than placing the Start Orb in the lower left corner.

I installed Startmenu 7 which turned out to be Startmenu X (XP).

It did put a very nice "orb" down at the left corner, but the menu is a bit limited compared to Vista Startmenu, fx. you can NOT order the folders in the left menu as you want them.
So in my opinion the older Vista Startmenu is a lot better....

But the optimum "startmenu" would probably be to create my own....

Personally, I'm trying NOT to resort to a Start menu. I'm trying to get used to Metro UI as a Start area. It's not that easy - it's cluttered and way too much un-used programs taking up space and I have to filter through all that to find the one program I DO need.

Thank you so much hackerman1! trying to find my programs list was a pain in the butt. the only thing I didn't like about win8 was the start menu missing.
    Now it is perfect! thanks,
    deb

    Youīre welcome.
Good to see that someone likes the info....
I also have some wild ideas about creating a good startmenu.
Btw. i have never really liked the startmenu in Vista / W7, but itīs a LOT better than Metro...

Normally i use Total Commander: Total Commander - home, which basically is the same as the "old" Norton Commander.
(I just noticed when i checked their webbsite that a new version was released yesterday.)
Itīs an old habit from the "old" DOS-days when i used Norton Commander, i normally only use the startmenu for starting "system commands".
I also have my own menufolders on the desktop with shortcuts to some often used programs.
