    Question Social Network Services

I resisted signing up for "social network" accounts (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) for a long time and finally gave up, signing up for LinkedIn to write a "review" for a friend, then Bill Pytlovany convinced me to join Twitter. Another friend convinced me to sign up for Facebook.

Social network service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services.

Social networking has created new ways to communicate and share information. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people, and it now seems that social networking will be an enduring part of everyday life. The main types of social networking services are those which contain directories of some categories (such as former classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and recommender systems linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with MySpace and Facebook being the most widely used in North America;[1] Nexopia (mostly in Canada);[2] Bebo,[3] Facebook, Hi5, MySpace, Tagged, Xing;[4] and Skyrock in parts of Europe;[5] Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America;[6] and Friendster, Orkut, Xiaonei and Cyworld in Asia and the Pacific Islands.
Twitter / SecurityGarden and Twitter / WinVistaClub are following each other in Twitter. Any other Twits who are Tweeting from WVC?

LinkedIn is a very good "Professional Network"

I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a job or looking to move up to a better job or like me (a consultant).

The idea is a simple one. Make your profile, your resume and grow the number of people you are linked to. As you grow your links, you grow a huge professional network.

Say you have a couple hundred direct links to people you know and you find a job at company A for a Manager of IT. You do a search for company A on LinkedIn and find out that one of your direct links is linked to the hiring manager at company A.

You ask to your direct link to write a recommendation on your profile and introduce you to the hiring manager via LinkedIn.

The hiring manager sees your profile on LinkedIn and sees all your recommendations from people who have worked directly with you and they see that you are linked to someone else they know directly. They call that person to ask about you and they tell them how great you are.

You just landed a job via LinkedIn.

You can also search job postings that are posted as LinkedIn connections preferred.

I have a link to my LinkedIn profile in my sig.

    Thumbs down

I do not like nor trust any of these so called social net working sites and therefore will never join any of them. I had a very bad experience through You tube where someone got hold hold of my email address and contacted another person who then sent me what can only be described as pornographic pictures. Fortunately, my wife did not see them and I was able to contact You tube who resolved this for me, but I had to change my email address as well as doing other things. I believe it is not unusual for such things to happen, so it is a case of once bitten twice shy. And what is more if I want people to know what I am doing I call them, on the telephone or email them.

I didn't do so nor did I know what Youtube was until this happened, but a friend tells me that it easy to get hold of any details and use them, particularly if you have an email address starting with the letters a-k. In fact they showed me just how much information can be gotten very easily... but I do not remember how nor do I want to do so. My details are completely different now and things have tightened up all round. But you'd be surprised just what is out there about you.

    I agree.

I also remember reading somewhere that its almost impossible to remove all your details from a Facebook account, even after you have deleted it! A simple google for : delete facebook account will tell you what I mean.

So best to think twice before giving out any details.

Unfortunately the more popular something becomes the more open it is to attack at them moment it is twitter so I wonder how long before we start to hear that it too has been attacked. Sadly, some people just want to cause harm to others because they are cowards and can not bear to see others enjoying themselves

I have just read what you wrote about Twitter being hacked and read the article. The BBC had something on Twitter, like thay had something on Facebook and Bebo before. Twitter seems current "flavour" of the month now, as those others were previoulsly. So I'll just keep my social networking to face to face encounters with friend that I've met and have known for years, the only exception to that will be my friends on this Forum. Some times it may just well pay to be a grumpy old man like myself....
