If there were no centralized Registry, I guess we would have been seeing a lot of plain text .INI files splattered all over our system

you've big problems I'd do a reinstall to get the registry back, or perhaps you could do things in DOS (if it still here) I am not a techy so I don't know

In my opinion, there would be no registry tweaks!! Also, there would be less virus issues..

I think registry tweaking has become a hobby occupation. Most of it is pretty useless though. If you want to crash, play a round of registry. LOL

Hey... thats interesting discussion going here.

Thanks to Mr. Gates/Microsoft, Windows has Registry Hives otherwise we have to edit .conf like Linux or .ini files like the most olders Windows Operating System.

Windows Registry is central configuration data of Windwos OS.

Default I remember Windows before the Registry

It was more stable. It was much less likely to require reinstall due to Registry corruption because the file did not exist. Copying an application from one system to another was a breeze, installation was not necessary. System management was easier because each application was only responsible for itself.

It was a simpler, gentler time when product activation was only a dream in Bill Gates' eye.

Other OSes do not use a hierarchic, flat file database to control the OS. If it is going to exist, and I would argue it should not, at least the coders at Microsoft could have used a relational DB.

Yes but would that be a problem Andy??

I actually prefer programs THAT DONT PUT STUFF IN THE REG and instead have thier stuff in a LOCAL FILE in thier folder....

www.voiperized.com is one of my favourites and it is NOT INSTALLED nor HAS ANYTHING IN THE REG! (Excellent text/voice client (Like AIM but better (Would be nice to talk to you all using it sometime )))
