Exclamation XRumer, a Windows blackhat SEO program that creates forum spam

XRumer is a Windows blackhat SEO program that is able to successfully register and forum spam with the aim of boosting search engine rankings. The program is able to bypass security techniques commonly used by many forums and blogs to deter automated spam, such as account registration, client detection, many forms of CAPTCHAs, and e-mail activation before posting. The program utilises socks and http proxies in an attempt to make it more difficult for administrators to block posts by source IP and features a proxy checking tool to verify the integrity and anonymity of the proxies used.

In addition, the software can avoid the suspicions of forum administrators by first registering to make a post in the form of a question which mentions the spam product ("Where can I get...?"), before registering another account to post a spam link which mentions the product. The side effect of these innocent-looking posts is that helpful forum visitors may search on a search engine (e.g. Google) for the product and themselves post a link to help out, thus bolstering the product's Google stats without falling afoul of forum posting policies. The software is also capable of avoiding detection by making posts in off-topic, spam and overflow sections of forums thus attempting to keep its activities in high activity low content areas of the targeted forum.

Came across this interesting read at Wikipedia.

As a forum admin for an ISP, we had a lot of trouble with XRumer a copule of years back.

When the appropriate filtering became available in the forum I made any variation of the name blacklisted as with any registered names or posts. I can't remember all details but haven't heard or seen anything about it until I saw this post mentioning it.

It was like a plague at the time.

We now use a "1st Post must be approved" entry which either foils spammers or highlights it for admins with an intelligent captcha which seems to suit us for now..

Well.... a quick google brings plenty of XRumer sites up, e.g. ht tp://w ww.xrumer.co/ regd. 2011 so they are still having a go at it, pointing to the social sites as targets as well. :/

XRUMER is one of the best tool which the blackhatter can own. This tool itself costs more then $500 and works great.I have used this tool a lot of times but haven't spammed any of the forums :P. As ChrisP said the only way to prevent this tool from posting on the forum is to either manually approve the first thread or use a question answer during registration.

Thanks for your inputs Chris and Ankur.

I wonder how we can find out if we have been targeted

Just check some of the profiles with 0 posts if they have added the links in signature without contributing to the forum then TWC has also been targeted. What Xrumer does is basically it creates profiles with the links mentioned in signature and people usually ping those links to get backlink.

Another feature of Xrumer is to post on the forums but most of the guys refrain from doing so..
