Default Vista Business updates don't like RAID1

One machine in my office is used as a file server i.e. all files by all the staff members are stored in that machine. I have installed licensed Vista Business in that machine. Yeah, I am brave (or is that called stupid?)

For data safety, I have RAID1 in that machine (RAID card and two HDs mirroring the data).

Many times after update, Vista cannot recognise RAID and therefore cannot boot. I have to boot from the DVD and re-install RAID card drivers

    Any solution to this?

I'd suggest the problem was with your raid card drivers, or its firmware.
Your raid card site would probably be the best place to go for support.
PS I hope you are not using winupdate for drivers.
Drivers *if* required should be obtained from the manufacturers sites.

From what little I know, it is never a good idea to use raid for a boot
drive. It's best to have Vista or any system boot from an ordinary drive
outside the array, and use the array for data storage.

Hmm. So you think I should invest in another hard drive?

I'm no expert on RAID, but that is the advice I was given. Also, it is not a
good idea to backup the operating system to a RAID drive either. As to
investing, I presume it will be an expense, and perhaps you have a smaller
drive around that can be used for this. It only takes about 15 GB. So there
may be no cost at all. In any event, good luck.
