    Question Hard drive space disappeared

I've got a drive C:\ with about 30 GB on it.

I installed only ms office (1,5 GB). System (vista) folder eats about 8Gb.

I don't have any documets, photos , music etc.- system is very fresh.

The problem is: i've got only 5 GB free space on the partition.

When we calculate it then there is a question -

what eats almost 15GB of free space ?? strange...

ps. I also used Vista's Disk Cleanup Utility. This operation recover only 2GB , where is the missing 13GB ?

    1. Part of the drive is eaten by the shadowstorage (up to 15% max.)
    2. There are a lot of hidden system files that you don't see.
    3. I have 60GBs used on C:\, but I also have some of my own data (maybe 5GBs).

You are right. But 15% of 30GB is 4,5GB not 15GB ! What eats so much space ?

Just for your info, my Windows folder is around 11 GB

To know what's eaten up your Disk Space, use freeware Disktective. It does not need to be installed. Just copy the program files onto your hard disk, double click on the .exe file and Disktective will start. You will be able to know which file or folder is occupying what space.

Hot to Free Up Lost Disk Space in Windows Vista may also help you.

WinDirStat is another nice program to see what's going on on your disk - and it makes pretty pictures. WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics

Ok. I used the Disktective and the mistery is solved.
According to the program stats the system is using almost 63% of the partition and it is 22GB!
It is a lots of resources.
    Thank for the help everyone
