    Unhappy USB Port and WUFDHOST.EXE

Whenever I plug a device of any type into my USB port WUFDHOST.exe starts running and almost stops my computer. I am running Vista Home Premium SP1.

I cannot stop this process, it says access denied, and can only recover by restarting my computer.

The System Event Log registers a critical event as follows:- This particular one is for a TomTom GO 520 but there are many others for flash drives, card readers etc.

    General

The device GO (location (unknown)) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem.

Got a bit further with this problem.

WUFDHOST is running as a child process of one of the many svchost.exe. It would appear to be continually querying the registry.

I can't get any further than that and it's driving me nuts. When I try the same same thing on an XP machine it works fine so the problem must lie in the hardware or software on my Vista machine.

Did you scan your system with a good antivirus like Kaspersky or NOD?

wudfhost.exe is a legit Microsoft process for Windows Driver Foundation, situated in the System32 folder.

Malware writers love to mis-spell a bit, to create confusion.
Your wufdhost.exe could hence be malware.

Where is it located? Rt click on the file and check its properties.

Run your AV. Additionally also get this file checked at Jotti Online malware scan

If you suspect it to be malware, delete it. Use UnLocker or 'delete doctor' to delete it if you are unable to delete it.

Thanks Guys for the help. Unfortunately nothing worked but I eventually had a bit of a fall out with AVG and decided to change my anti-virus. I'm now using AVAST and so far, touch wood, everything is OK

This bugger gave me a lot of trouble too (and on 2 different system). Same as you with USB sticks - and I was not using AVG (I have Norton and Kaspersky). I went into "Services" and disabled the Windows Driver Foundation. Then there was peace in the box.
