Allway Sync is free software and is what I use as it synchronizes all my hard drives to one external so I never have to worry again.

Allway Sync: Free File Synchronization, Backup, Data Replication, PC Sync Software, Freeware, File Sync, Data Synchronization Software

I use Acronis True Image Home 2009 for making complete disk images of my system. I also like Microsoft's SyncToy 2.0 for synchronizing certain folders to my external drive, like Music and Pictures. Simple, and it works great.
