If it's one thing I've learned in dealing with PCs over the years, it's that anything is possible with computers. Could be a loose/faulty connection? I was guessing a hardware problem since a reinstall of Windows did not help.

I have no idea. Check Acer's site for manuals, or take it to a technician for a diagnosis. You've tried everything you can do on your end: reinstall drivers, reinstall the OS. Time for a hands-on look by a specialist, I suspect.

From what you say it certainly sounds like some wire came loose. The upgrade of the RAM should not have anything to do with it. That is in a very confined area. Too bad it is already over a year old. Then you probably have no warranty left - unless you bought an extended warranty. But a loose wire you can probably not fix yourself.

So my best bet would be to send it into Geek Squad? Or some computer store around here?

yeah, did you download and install the latest driver from the vendor's site after the fresh installation of OS? but vista have generic sound drivers and provides sound by default in most of the systems, this may also happend due to the hardware conflict as stated by james n whs. let it handle to some hardware expert...
