Thumbs down Nero 10 free version installs Ask toolbar without user consent!

Looks like Nero too is going over to the dark side by installing the Ask toolbar WITHOUT offering users the option to uncheck it!

I had posted about the availability of Nero BurnLite 10 free version availability when a reader acr commented on this, pointing out to a Softpedia comment.

Any program which does not give you the option to 'install/dont install' another software, is what some refer to as Foistware.

In all fairness, a check-box must be provided where one can check/uncheck the option to install the toolbar.

    Take care !

Know of any! similar good freeware burning software, please do share!

This is still worth having since the Ask Toolbar can easily be uninstalled afterward.

and of course it should be UNCHECKED by default, because otherwise most people will install it,
    thinking itīs "recommended" / preferred.

most people are "trigger-happy", they click "Yes" on everything....

This isn't anything new. Nero has been on the Calendar of Updates Installer's Hall of Shame for a while.

    venkat: Nice trick.

hackerman1; Yes, I did want to know a good alternative.

Corrine : I understand that this is the first time Nero bundled Ask toolbar without giving the user any indication that it was being bundled.

I have Nero 7 but as a free software I would recommend DVD flick I have used with no problems. Converts AVI to DVD nicely. it also has a Tetras style game to play while waiting if your into that sort of thing.

As an additional when you install Nero 7 it has the nasty "ask tool bar" on that too but at least you have the option to not install.

    hi !

previously i have used StarBurn: StarBurn Disc and Data Burning Software. CD DVD Blu-ray Recording and Mastering SDK

i have also tried ImgBurn: The Official ImgBurn Website
it also works well but i didnīt like it.
itīs gui is confusing, it has too many "expert"-settings.

the last months i have used InfraRecorder: InfraRecorder Welcome

nice clean interface, easy to understand, works very well.

btw. i have a licensed version of Nero, i got it when i bought my DVD-burner, but i have never used it,
as it was very confusing compared to the older version i have used before (at the university).

i have read about other good alternatives, but i have not tried them yet,
i havenīt had any real reason, because InfraRecorder works...

Ha, same, I barely use optical media now. And when I do, I use the default burner. :P

Nero is doing this to gain some revenue (Ask.com pays them money to bundle it in). That way they can make money off free software. Yup, it's a hassle but you can uninstall it easily afterwards.
