Default SmoothWall: An Open-Source Firewall to protect your Network

SmoothWall Express 3.0 is an open source GNU/Linux firewall which is security-hardened and freely downloadable. It has minimal hardware requirements and a small footprint. It should work with nearly any Pentium class computer with at least 128MB of RAM and a hard disk with a capacity of 2GB or greater.

The SmoothWall GPL project was founded in the summer of 2000 by Lawrence Manning (Principle Code Author) and Richard Morrell (Project Manager). Their goal was to create a Linux distribution that could recycle and convert your old / redundant PC into a hardened internet firewall device.

They have just released SmoothWall Express 3.0 SP3 Installation CD (iso image). This new CD contains SmoothWall Express 3.0 with updates 1 8 pre-installed meaning that new installations may take advantage of the improved driver support, the Ext4 filesystem, larger drive support and RAID array support introduced in SmoothWall Express 3.0 Update 8.

Anyone heard of it or have any experience with it?

After seeing the Linux reference, I searched Scot's Newsletter Forums* because that site has excellent information and support for Linux. It appears many of the folks there have long been using Smoothwall as a router. Discussions on Smoothwall date to 2003 at Scot's. Another is m0n0wall. Info from Wikipedia: SmoothWall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
