If you are using Windows 7 built-in burning functions instead of 3rd party burning software and you try to plug an USB Mass Storage device into the computer while burning a disc - and if you find out that the burning function is no longer available and the "burn to disc" button is grayed out, then this may interest you.

This occurs because a locking situation happened while Windows Explorer was setting the device information. This will cause an incorrect registry setting to be set which will cause the burning function to be disabled.

In such a scenario, KB2651178 recommends the following:

  • Reboot the system. The function will become normal after reboot.
  • Avoid plugging storage devices during burning operations.
