Thread: No fix for Epson scanner and Vista

Default No fix for Epson scanner and Vista

We now have a useless scanner (Epson 1200u) thanks to Vista being
incompatible with it's software. We have no way to print pictures, thanks to
Vista being incompatible with our HP printer/it's graphic software. Thanks
to Vista we will now be forced to either purchase new perifs, waste a lot of
time moving files from the XP machines in the back office or do without.

The last two computers for our office will be ordered from Dell and have XP
    installed.

You can either whine ... or you could try entering the name of your scanner
    into "Google"
It took 3 seconds to find this link.
Your scanner is in the list !

What you describe is very often (but not always) the situation.

But I'd like to point out that this has *nothing* to do with Vista in
particular. It has to do with having older peripheral devices and
switching to any new operating system.

Writing drivers for a new operating system is the responsibility of
the manufacturer of the peripheral device. The manufacturer has to
decide whether it's in his financial interest to do so. If the device
is a relative new one, his decision is usually to write the new
drivers because doing so helps him sell more of those devices. If the
device is older, it hardly ever helps him to write drivers for a new
operating system and he hardly ever does.

By the way, anyone contemplating changing to a new operating system
should always check in advance whether drivers exist for all the
devices he owns. It's a normal part of deciding whether it makes sense
for you to upgrade operating systems. It looks like you neglected to
    do that in advance.

    Your choice, of course.

Or try Linux. Epson has good support for Linux.

    Fudge linux.
    It's at < 1 % install base for a reason.

You're blaming the wrong party. Epson is responsible for writing supporting
software for their hardware under any given operating system. In many cases
it's not that they can't, the specs for Vista have been out for several
years. They don't because if forces you to buy new hardware, there's no
profit in spending time writing new software for old products.

And the Twain driver for XP will work in Vista, as he's been told.
    TWICE.

Like I said: he couldn't find a St. Bernard if he was in a phone booth
    with two of them.

Or you can get slapped down. Just for fun I looked and my old printer
a Epson Stylus 900 IS NOT listed. You can take your foot out of your
    mouth now.

Nevertheless, Microsoft, being one of the leaders in the industry and the
provider of the widely used Windows, should spend much more efforts on
collaborating and working with printer manufacturers for providing much
better generic printer and/or scanner drivers, at least, for basic
    functions.

This software blames hardware and hardware blames software game should have
been ended long time ago with the introduction of plug-and-play.

Ultimately, it will haunt back to the company if problem persists because it
will only get more, but not less, consumer and business who would think that
it's ridiculous to upgrade to or purchase new hardware and software for
otherwise working well ones because of a new OS, also given the fact of the
    diminishing return of
    newer OS.
