Does it present you with any error messages, possibly with an error code. If so that would be useful to understand what may be causing it. Also this may help you to get it back working again
Windows 7 or Vista Updates Fail To Install
Error codes are usually 80080008. My settings are ok in terms of Windows Update being able to access the Inernet.
This is a common error people have had with Windows Update, try the fix from Microsoft in the following link to reset your Windows Update Components and see if this resolves the issue

Try restarting the Windows Update Service.
Go to Start > Run > services.msc
Locate Windows Update Service and select stop and then start the service.
